Maya Angelou reading her poem "A Brave and Startling Truth"
Maya Angelou reads her poem "A Brave and Startling Truth" which she wrote in commemoration of the UN's 50th Anniversary, in 1995. A Brave and Startling Truth We, this people, on a small and lonely planet Traveling through casual space Past aloof stars, across the way of indifferent suns To a destination where all signs tell us It is possible and imperative that we learn A brave and startling truth And when we come to it To the day of peacemaking When we release our fingers From fists of hostility And allow the pure air to cool our palms When we come to it When the curtain falls on the minstrel show of hate And faces sooted with scorn are scrubbed clean When battlefields and coliseum No longer rake our unique and particular sons and daughters Up with the bruised and bloody grass To lie in identical plots in foreign soil When the rapacious storming of the churches The screaming racket in the temples have ceased When the pennants are waving gaily When the banners of the world tremble Stoutly in the good, clean breeze When we come to it When we let the rifles fall from our shoulders And children dress their dolls in flags of truce When land mines of death have been removed And the aged can walk into evenings of peace When religious ritual is not perfumed By the incense of burning flesh And childhood dreams are not kicked awake By nightmares of abuse When we come to it Then we will confess that not the Pyramids With their stones set in mysterious perfection Nor the Gardens of Babylon Hanging as eternal beauty In our collective memory Not the Grand Canyon Kindled into delicious color By Western sunsets Nor the Danube, flowing its blue soul into Europe Not the sacred peak of Mount Fuji Stretching to the Rising Sun Neither Father Amazon nor Mother Mississippi who, without favor, Nurture all creatures in the depths and on the shores These are not the only wonders of the world When we come to it We, this people, on this minuscule and kithless globe Who reach daily for the bomb, the blade and the dagger Yet who petition in the dark for tokens of peace We, this people on this mote of matter In whose mouths abide cankerous words Which challenge our very existence Yet out of those same mouths Come songs of such exquisite sweetness That the heart falters in its labor And the body is quieted into awe We, this people, on this small and drifting planet Whose hands can strike with such abandon That in a twinkling, life is sapped from the living Yet those same hands can touch with such healing, irresistible tenderness That the haughty neck is happy to bow And the proud back is glad to bend Out of such chaos, of such contradiction We learn that we are neither devils nor divines When we come to it We, this people, on this wayward, floating body Created on this earth, of this earth Have the power to fashion for this earth A climate where every man and every woman Can live freely without sanctimonious piety Without crippling fear When we come to it We must confess that we are the possible We are the miraculous, the true wonder of this world That is when, and only when We come to it.

AN UNSEEN WORLD by Paul Rosolie, USA - Forest Film Winner
'An Unseen World' is one of 5 films that won an Award at the International Forests Short Film Festival. The film weaves together camera trap footage taken on an Amazon Rainforest tributary located in the Madre de Dios region of Peru. It represents nature film making at its most raw and innovative - a stark drama of unfolding forest life as it happens. The film gives us a glimpse of the rich biodiversity of the region -- from patrolling pumas and hunting jaguars to curious anteaters. Explorer, writer and film maker, Paul Rosolie, was awarded at UNFF10 in Istanbul, Turkey on 10 April 2013. The United Nations Forum on Forests Secretariat partnered with the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival to honor the creative efforts of film makers who capture dynamic and unique relationship between forests and the people who depend on them. This year's Film Festival was for short films of five minutes or less. 128 entries from 38 countries competed to win at the prestigious Festival.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction
THE SENDAI FRAMEWORK: MAKING THE DIFFERENCE FOR POVERTY, HEALTH AND RESILIENCE WHAT IS IT? The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 with its seven targets and four priorities for action, was adopted at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction on March 18, 2015. It was endorsed by the UN General Assembly on June 3, 2015. The Sendai Framework is a 15-year, voluntary, non-binding agreement which recognizes that the State has the primary role to reduce disaster risk but that responsibilities are to be shared with other stakeholders including local government and the private sector. It aims for the following outcome: The substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods and health and in the economic, physical, social, cultural and environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities and countries. THE SEVEN TARGETS The targets focus on substantial reductions in (1) disaster mortality, (2) number of affected people, (3) direct economic losses and (4) reducing damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services. The Sendai Framework also seeks a substantial increase in (5) national and local disaster risk reduction strategies by 2020, (6) enhanced cooperation to developing countries, and (7) a substantial increase in multi-hazard early warning systems, disaster risk information and assessments. THE FOUR PRIORITIES FOR ACTION Priority 1. Understanding disaster risk: Disaster risk management needs to be based on an understanding of disaster risk in all its dimensions of vulnerability, capacity, exposure of persons and assets, hazard characteristics and the environment. Such knowledge can be used for risk assessment, prevention, mitigation, preparedness and response. Priority 2. Strengthening disaster risk governance to manage disaster risk: Disaster risk governance at the national, regional and global levels is very important for prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery, and rehabilitation. It fosters collaboration and partnership. Priority 3. Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience: Public and private investment in disaster risk prevention and reduction through structural and non-structural measures are essential to enhance the economic, social, health and cultural resilience of persons, communities, countries and their assets, as well as the environment. Priority 4. Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction: The growth of disaster risk means there is a need to strengthen disaster preparedness for response, take action in anticipation of events, and ensure capacities are in place for effective response and recovery at all levels. The recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction phase is a critical opportunity to build back better, including through integrating disaster risk reduction into development measures. World Humanitarian Day 2016 – One Humanity
United Nations - Every day, humanitarian aid workers stand on the front lines of war and disaster, braving tremendous dangers and difficulties to deliver assistance to those who need it most. World Humanitarian Day (WHD), which takes place every year on 19 August, recognizes the aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and mobilizes people to advocate for humanitarian action. The day was designated by the General Assembly seven years ago to coincide with the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. This World Humanitarian Day, the UN and its partners are calling for global solidarity with the more than 130 million people around the world who need humanitarian assistance to survive. Under the theme of ‘One Humanity’, World Humanitarian Day will highlight how the world came together in Istanbul for the World Humanitarian Summit earlier this year, and made commitments to support people affected by crisis and ensure that aid workers can safely and more effectively deliver to those in need. Events will be held around the world on 19 August to honor the work of humanitarian workers and to celebrate the theme of ‘One Humanity’. In New York, a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the United Nations headquarters, and a high-level event will be held in the General Assembly Hall. In addition a digital campaign will be launched on the day to raise awareness of the impossible choices that people caught in crisis face. World Humanitarian Day will also feature photo exhibitions and film screenings documenting the lives of those affected by conflict and disaster. United Nations Year in Review 2017
The year 2017 marked a shift in leadership at the United Nations as Secretary-General António Guterres began his term at a time of heightened global challenges. The world's fastest-growing refugee crisis unfolded in Myanmar while the threat of famine loomed over Yemen, South Sudan, Nigeria and Somalia. Resolved to forestall crises before they occur, Secretary-General Guterres launched a series of reforms aimed at advancing meditation and prevention. These build on past successes, including the proud legacy left by the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, which closed its doors after reshaping the global approach to war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. As the United Nations rises to the world's collective security challenges, the voices of the people most affected resound with greater meaning for our common future.

In the cause of Peace: Honouring 60 years of UN Peacekeeping
United Nations, January 2009 (English Video): UN peacekeeping has been developed to help countries torn by conflict create conditions for lasting peace since the first mission was established in May 1948. There have been a total of 63 UN peacekeeping operations. Currently, more than 100,000 military and civilian personnel serve in 20 UN peace operations worldwide. Over the years, UN peacekeeping has evolved to meet the demands of different conflicts and changing political landscapes. It has proved itself to be an efficient and cost-effective international instrument to restore peace in post-conflict situations. In addition to military functions, todays UN peacekeeping undertakes a wide variety of other complex tasks. Peacekeepers now are administrators and economists, police officers and legal experts, de-miners and electoral observers, human rights monitors and specialists in civil affairs, gender, governance, humanitarian workers and experts in communications and public information. UN peacekeeping continues to evolve, rising to meet new challenges and political realities. Honouring 60 years of UN Peacekeeping website: http://www.un.org/events/peacekeeping60/

‘The ocean and us’ - BBC Earth, United Nations Ocean Conference
United Nations - This film, produced by the BBC, has been presented at the opening of The Ocean Conference that is taking place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from the 5th to the 9th of June 2017. http://www.un.org/en/conf/ocean/index.shtml Script: Our ocean defines our planet. It sustains us… and it is home to more than half of all life on earth today. The presence of the ocean touches every living thing… no matter where it lives…The air we breathe, and the water we consume, are ultimately linked to the seas. The ocean drives our weather… and stabilises our climate.Nowhere is more powerful and unforgiving… yet more beautiful and endlessly fascinating. Yet for too long, we have taken the ocean for granted. Our actions have pushed species to the brink… And impacted on every ocean habitat… no matter how remote… or how deep.We haven’t understood what the ocean does for us. The effects of climate change have been softened by the ocean. But now we are facing the consequences: the seas are warming… rising… and becoming more acidic. It’s a sobering thought, that coral reefs may be lost within the next century. We all need a healthy ocean, so we must change our ways.Together, with the right management, we can re-populate the seas... We can reduce marine pollution… and minimise the impact of ocean acidification. The ocean’s power of regeneration is remarkable… if we just offer it the chance. It’s not too late. We are in reach of a whole new relationship with the ocean… a wiser, more sustainable relationship. The choice lies with us.

Yemen Humanitarian Crisis
Yemen is the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. More than 22 million people need help right now. The impact of the conflict is devastating. Hunger is everywhere. 17 million Yemenis – 60 per cent of the population – do not know where their next meal is coming from. Millions of people lack safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Last year, the largest cholera outbreak in modern history claimed thousands of lives. There are many obstacles and difficulties, but front-line agencies are doing everything they can to reach the people who need help the most. Each month, seven million people are receiving help; in the months ahead, partners will be reaching more than 8 million. (Video courtesy of OHCHR, WFP, and UNICEF)
