TEDxBloomington - Shawn Achor - "The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance"

12:29
Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard. His research and lectures on happiness and human potential have received attention in The New York Times, Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on NPR and CNN Radio, and he travels around the United States and Europe giving talks on positive psychology to Fortune 500 corporations, schools, and non-profit organizations. Achor graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a BA in English and Religion and earned a Masters degree from Harvard Divinity School in Christian and Buddhist ethics. Now he is the CEO of Aspirant, a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers-people who are well above average-to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, he clearly and humorously describes to organizations how to increase happiness and meaning, raise success rates and profitability, and create positive transformations that ripple into more successful cultures. In Shawn's TEDxBloomington presentation, he says that most modern research focuses on the average, but that "if we focus on the average, we will remain merely average." He wants to study the positive outliers, and learn how not only to bring people up to the average, but to move the entire average up. www.goodthinkinc.com About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. The 1200% Increase in my Prescription Drug Costs

04:00
In which Hank is pissed off because the price of his prescription drugs went up 1200% in one month. So he asks nerdfighteria to write a nice letter to Roger Boissonneault at rboissonneault@wcrx.com. If you could ask him why the price went up so much, why the program expired four months early, and why no effort was made to contact my doctor about these dramatic changes, that would be fantastic. Also, whatever else you want to say. I feel a little bit like this was a heroin deal "first time's free" kind of thing. TEDxTulsa - Brett McKay - "Reviving the Lost Art of Manliness

12:23
Brett McKay is the founder and editor-in-chief of " The Art of Manliness" blog, a men's lifestyle site dedicated to reviving the lost art of manliness. After noticing most of the men's magazines on the stands talked about the same old things every month - six pack abs, $2,000 watches and hat babes - Brett created "The Art of Manliness" in January 2008 to change the tone and discussion on what it means to be a man. "The Art of Manliness" has been featured in the Chicago Tribune and The Toronto Star and on CNN. In 2009, Brett, along with his wife, Kate McKay, tuned the blog into a book and published " The Art of Manliness: Classic Skills and Manners for the Modern Man." TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has become ever broader. Along with two annual conferences -- the TED Conference in Long Beach and Palm Springs each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK each summer -- TED includes the award-winning TEDTalks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.

Never miss a talk! SUBSCRIBE to the TEDx channel: http://bit.ly/1FAg8hB Robyn shares her personal story and how it inspired her current path as a "Real Food" evangelist. Grounded in a successful Wall Street career that was more interested in food as good business than good-for-you, this mother of four was shaken awake by the dangerous allergic reaction of one of her children to a "typical" breakfast. Her mission to unearth the cause revealed more about the food industry than she could stomach, and impelled her to share her findings with others. Informative and inspiring. About this speaker Robyn authored "The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It." A former Wall Street food industry analyst, Robyn brings insight, compassion and detailed analysis to her research into the impact that the global food system is having on the health of our children. She founded allergykidsfoundation.org and was named by Forbes as one of "20 Inspiring Women to Follow on Twitter." The New York Times has passionately described her as "Food's Erin Brockovich." http://allergykidsfoundation.org http://twitter.com/unhealthytruth Before we released our speaker's names, we featured a series of Speaker Teasers. Here, Robyn's: Real food, is that too much to ask; Big industry, I take to task; It's time that we reclaim our plates; from food forced into altered states.

The shape-shifting skulls of dinosaurs | Jack Horner | TEDxVancouver

"The Shape-Shifting Skulls of Dinosaurs" will focus on our latest discoveries concerning how dinosaur skulls changed as they grew to adult hood, and why it is that some dinosaur species are actually juvenile growth stages of other species. I will illustrate how it is that scientists got it wrong to begin with, and how we figured it all out. The talk will concern field work, studies in morphology, and osteohistology (the microscopic study of bone) Jack has published more than 170 professional papers, 9 popular books, and more than 100 popular articles. His book Digging Dinosaurs was described by New Scientist Magazine as one of the 250 most important science books of the 20th Century. Jack also directs the largest dinosaur field research program in the world. He was the technical advisor for Steven Spielberg on all of the Jurassic Park movies, and has worked with National Geographic, and The Discovery Channel on numerous dinosaur specials. The shocking truth about your health | Lissa Rankin | TEDxFiDiWomen

18:03
Lissa Rankin, MD is an OB/GYN physician, author, keynote speaker, consultant to health care visionaries, professional artist, and founder of the women's health and wellness community OwningPink.com. Discouraged by the broken, patriarchal health care system, she left her medical practice in 2007 only to realize that you can quit your job, but you can't quit your calling. This epiphany launched her on a journey of discovery that led her to become a leader in the field of mind/body medicine, which she blogs about at OwningPink.com and is writing about in her third book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself (Hay House, 2013). She teaches both patients and health care professionals how to make the body ripe for miracles by healing the mind and being healthy in all aspects of life, not just by promoting healthy behaviors like good nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep, but by encouraging health and authenticity in relationships, work, creative expression, spirituality, sexuality, finances, and living environment. She is leading a revolution to feminize how health care is received and delivered by encouraging collaboration, fostering self-healing, reconnecting health care and spirituality, empowering patients to tap into the mind's power to heal the body, and encouraging women not to settle for being merely well, but to strive for living vital, joyful, authentic lives full of "mojo." When not spreading the word, she chills out, paints, does yoga, and hikes in Marin County, CA with her husband and daughter. Event video by: http://repertoireproductions.com/

TEDxPhoenix 2010 Jolyana Bitsui - What it means to be a Navajo woman

19:18
Jolyana Bitsuie shares her journey becoming Miss Navajo Nation 2001/2002. As a young girl, she remembers moving away from the Navajo culture during her formative years as a high school student in Phoenix. Her mother understood, however, that one day she would come back and she did. Two days after being selected as Miss Navajo Nation, September 11th happened and she spent the next year representing the Navajo Nation across the country. As Miss Navajo, she shared what it meant to be a Navajo woman. She was the representation of her mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, and communicated the importance of knowing who you are as an individual. Today, she teaches urban Navajos to keep their language and be proud of their roots, to ensure the survival of their language and culture. Shakira's Speech at the swearing-in Ceremony for the White House Initiative on Ed. Exc for Hispanics

03:24
http://www.shakira.com Being here today is a tremendous honor for me. I am thankful to President Obama and I am humbled that my philanthropic experience could be helpful in some measure and can be used to amplify the message and work of the President and this Commission. Latino youth are the fastest-growing group in America, and more Latino children are living in poverty than children of any other racial or ethnic group. For a number of reasons, young Latinos in this country disproportionately drop out of school and far too few finish college. And as I have seen in my own Foundation work, the only road out of poverty is education - of that I am convinced. Investing in the educational achievement for Latinos will not only determine the economic future and competitiveness of this nation, but can serve as a model for the world. I hope that through my appointment to this commission, I will be able to share what I've learned through the 15 years I have been involved in the education of Latino children. I am sure you will agree with me that race and ethnicity shouldn't be factors in the success of any child. It is my belief and its also been demonstrated that if we provide early childhood education to Latino children it would take less than a decade to reap the benefits since investment in early education is proven to generate the fastest returns to the state. With more ECD programs there will be less Latino students being held back, less dropouts and less crime involving school-age children; and they will be more productive individuals to society. Its proven that most Latino kids who drop out of school and perform poorly in high school didn't have access to an early childhood education and lacked essential attention, stimulation and nutrition during the first 6 years of their lives. Therefore, it is clear that the most powerful avenue for boosting academic achievement is improving the basic academic skills of children before kindergarten. The Obama administration has made a point to improve Latino education and -- as I spoke to the President previously -- I am extremely passionate about working with the White House to plan an early childhood education summit in the coming year. Latinos are the largest minority group in this country and as the Latino population grows, the U.S. economy becomes more and more dependent on its success. Americans must better understand the impact that the growing Latino population is having on the way we live today and on this nations future. Inevitably this country and its economic prosperity will also largely depend on our Hispanic kids. There is no doubt that the future of the United States is inextricably tied to the future of the Latino community here and the education of its youth. Thank you again, this is a great honor for me, I am so happy to be here.

Vance, Kerry Washington and Shaun White. BGCA's 2010 National Youth of the Year Mona Dixon rounded out the cast. The music heard in the announcement features Beyonce and was written by Diane Warren. The PSA, titled "Great Futures Start Here," was created to draw awareness about the critical issues -- high school dropout rate, childhood obesity, youth violence -- that puts millions of America's kids, and the nation's future, at risk. Kids in every community deserve a chance at a great future. Boys & Girls Clubs provide high-impact, affordable programs, and caring adult mentorship to give kids an opportunity to learn and grow. Joey Quits (worker quits hotel job with a marching band)

03:19
This is a video about supporting unions and workers' rights. https://www.twitter.com/joeyquits and https://instagram.com/laneve__ After a long, long fight, workers at this hotel have finally won the right to organize a union: https://pbn.com/Renaissance-Providence-Hotel-workers-vote-to-join-union,110150/ Visit https://www.joeyquits.com to hear stories from other hotel and restaurant workers. (We've since shut down the site but you can still view old posts and stories from hotel workers). Press Inquiries: joeldefrancesco@gmail.com FAQ: 1. Q: Why is your name bleeped out but you have your real name in your username? A: When we first uploaded it I bleeped my name out and didn't have my real name on anything related to the video. Once it began to get popular, I realized I could do more by attaching my name to it than by hiding from it (see my website/other videos/etc.) Youtube doesn't allow you to reupload videos so the name is bleeped out even though I used my real name online now. 2. Q: Didn't you screw yourself? Now you'll never have a job you idiot. A: No, I've gotten several jobs since making this video. In fact, the attention from this video and the things I've channeled it toward have created more opportunities than I ever had before. Video of Joey La Neve DeFrancesco quitting the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel Filmed by Jori Ketten, featuring the What Cheer? Brigade http://www.whatcheerbrigade.com I want to give a little context for the many of you who don't know me: I worked in this hotel for 3.5 years. I worked while going to school full time to pay my tuition and living expenses. This was not a job I had for two weeks before quitting in a hissy-fit. The working conditions in the hotel are horrendous. In the kitchen, workers are regularly forced to work 10, 11, 14, 16 hour shifts that begin at 5:30AM and last well into the night. Housekeepers are reprimanded if they fail to clean 16 rooms or more in a 9 hour shift. Anyone who speaks up—especially anyone who is openly pro-union—is disciplined or fired. Managers, like Jared, scream down employees daily. I worked extremely hard to change the conditions in the hotel. My co-workers and I regularly organized ourselves to push back against management and demand respect. I was also one of many workers who led the fight to organize a formal union at the hotel. For legal reasons I must mention that this specific action was an individual decision and had nothing to do with the union. The hotel has yet to recognize our union, and they continue a vicious union-busting campaign. They punish and fire pro-union workers, spread lies in captive-audience meetings, and generally attempt to scare the workers out of joining the union. Still, through just being organized and threatening to form a union, we've won countless victories, including raises, new uniforms, lower housekeeper room quotas, etc. This video a bit of performance art highlighting the struggle at the Renaissance Providence Hotel and hotels throughout the country. © Copyright 2011 Joey La Neve DeFrancesco All rights reserved Contact: joeldefrancesco@gmail.com best job quit. job quitting. quits job marching band. musical quit. Slavery By Another Name - Promo

03:54
Slavery by Another Name is a 90 minute documentary that challenges one of America's most cherished assumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Wall Street Journal senior writer Douglas A. Blackmon, the documentary explores the little-known story of the post-Emancipation era and the labor practices and laws that effectively created a new form of slavery in the South that persisted well into the 20th century. Produced by Twin Cities Public Television and premiering on PBS early 2012. Major funding for Slavery by Another Name is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The Coca-Cola Company and the CPB/PBS Diversity and Innovation Fund.

Hope of Profit, Social Change Meet in New College Programs

04:02
This is the VOA Special English Economics Report from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Small business entrepreneurs play an important part in American job growth. Small businesses have created almost two-thirds of new jobs in the last fifteen years. The economy has traditionally been divided into three sectors. One is the private sector, meaning businesses. The second is the public sector, or government. And the third is the nonprofit sector. But now some people talk about a fourth sector. It represents nonprofit and for-profit organizations working toward goals of social change and environmental activism. Universities are starting to offer training and degree programs to prepare students to work in this area. One of these schools is Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. It now offers a degree in social entrepreneurship. Bernard Turner is director of the Center for Social Entrepreneurship at the university. He says student interest is driving many of these new programs. "Students are saying 'Now I want to be an entrepreneur, but I want to do something that deals with a social problem or a social issue that's dear to me." William Paddock is founder and director of a business consulting company in Tennessee called WAP Sustainability. He has a business degree and training in the area of environmental sustainability. Recently, the Custom Packaging company of Lebanon, Tennessee, hired him to help make its business more environmentally friendly. The company makes cardboard advertising displays for sales campaigns. Mr. Paddock advised the company on recycling and ways to create less waste. He also persuaded the business to use electricity from solar energy. William Paddock offers his consulting services for profit, but says social responsibility is a big part of what his company does. "For us it's about protecting the environment, being better to society, but also there's an economic piece to it. We love to ... find our passions, but also save somebody money." There are now more than sixty American universities offering so-called green business degrees. The definition of social entrepreneurship and the exact nature of this sector continue to evolve. Some people are more interested in social programs and charity. Others are more interested in business plans and profits. But the root of the movement seems to be a desire to earn a living and make a difference at the same time. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal. You can watch a video report on social entrepreneurship at voaspecialenglish.com. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 03Jun2011)

TEDxTucson - James MacAdam - Green Streets of Tucson

10:07
Tucson was once the home of the nation's "Most Ugly Street", so we set about to change that in many innovative ways. James MacAdam takes us for a tour of Tucson and shows us what our streets look like through "muffin tin glasses" and how we can improve the way we capture water in such a hot and dry environment. People come from all over the world to learn rainwater harvesting techniques and permaculture methods from James and his Tucson colleagues. We've become innovators and world leaders in rainwater harvesting out of necessity, and its inspiring to see the living environment of entire neighborhoods be beautifully transformed by the people who live there. James is a writer, teacher and advocate for sustainable communities. He currently manages Tucson-based nonprofit Watershed Management Group's program to spread the use of green infrastructure throughout the US Southwest through community-based approaches. James has led corporate sustainability programs, led award-winning community development projects, and writes for the monthly The New Southwest. In his work and writing, he brings a unique perspective to the field of sustainability that values both individuals' and communities' inner and outer dimensions. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxTucson, where x = independently organized TED event.
