TEDxBloomington - Shawn Achor - "The Happiness Advantage: Linking Positive Brains to Performance"
Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard. His research and lectures on happiness and human potential have received attention in The New York Times, Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on NPR and CNN Radio, and he travels around the United States and Europe giving talks on positive psychology to Fortune 500 corporations, schools, and non-profit organizations. Achor graduated magna cum laude from Harvard with a BA in English and Religion and earned a Masters degree from Harvard Divinity School in Christian and Buddhist ethics. Now he is the CEO of Aspirant, a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers-people who are well above average-to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, he clearly and humorously describes to organizations how to increase happiness and meaning, raise success rates and profitability, and create positive transformations that ripple into more successful cultures. In Shawn's TEDxBloomington presentation, he says that most modern research focuses on the average, but that "if we focus on the average, we will remain merely average." He wants to study the positive outliers, and learn how not only to bring people up to the average, but to move the entire average up. www.goodthinkinc.com About TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. Robyn O'Brien | TEDxAustin 2011
Never miss a talk! SUBSCRIBE to the TEDx channel: http://bit.ly/1FAg8hB Robyn shares her personal story and how it inspired her current path as a "Real Food" evangelist. Grounded in a successful Wall Street career that was more interested in food as good business than good-for-you, this mother of four was shaken awake by the dangerous allergic reaction of one of her children to a "typical" breakfast. Her mission to unearth the cause revealed more about the food industry than she could stomach, and impelled her to share her findings with others. Informative and inspiring. About this speaker Robyn authored "The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food Is Making Us Sick and What We Can Do About It." A former Wall Street food industry analyst, Robyn brings insight, compassion and detailed analysis to her research into the impact that the global food system is having on the health of our children. She founded allergykidsfoundation.org and was named by Forbes as one of "20 Inspiring Women to Follow on Twitter." The New York Times has passionately described her as "Food's Erin Brockovich." http://allergykidsfoundation.org http://twitter.com/unhealthytruth Before we released our speaker's names, we featured a series of Speaker Teasers. Here, Robyn's: Real food, is that too much to ask; Big industry, I take to task; It's time that we reclaim our plates; from food forced into altered states.

TEDxBrownUniversity - Willoughby Britton - Why A Neuroscientist Would Study Meditation
In this TEDxTalk, Professor Willoughby Britton tells us that happiness is not about getting what you want. She discusses our mental qualities as habits we practice and she sheds light on an important link between neuroscience and contemplative studies. Britton received a B.A. in Neuroscience from Colgate University in 1996 and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Arizona in 2007. Broadly speaking, she is interested in the role of variations in conscious states in the intersection between affective neuroscience, clinical science and religion. The shocking truth about your health | Lissa Rankin | TEDxFiDiWomen
Lissa Rankin, MD is an OB/GYN physician, author, keynote speaker, consultant to health care visionaries, professional artist, and founder of the women's health and wellness community OwningPink.com. Discouraged by the broken, patriarchal health care system, she left her medical practice in 2007 only to realize that you can quit your job, but you can't quit your calling. This epiphany launched her on a journey of discovery that led her to become a leader in the field of mind/body medicine, which she blogs about at OwningPink.com and is writing about in her third book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself (Hay House, 2013). She teaches both patients and health care professionals how to make the body ripe for miracles by healing the mind and being healthy in all aspects of life, not just by promoting healthy behaviors like good nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep, but by encouraging health and authenticity in relationships, work, creative expression, spirituality, sexuality, finances, and living environment. She is leading a revolution to feminize how health care is received and delivered by encouraging collaboration, fostering self-healing, reconnecting health care and spirituality, empowering patients to tap into the mind's power to heal the body, and encouraging women not to settle for being merely well, but to strive for living vital, joyful, authentic lives full of "mojo." When not spreading the word, she chills out, paints, does yoga, and hikes in Marin County, CA with her husband and daughter. Event video by: http://repertoireproductions.com/

TEDxPhoenix 2010 Jolyana Bitsui - What it means to be a Navajo woman
Jolyana Bitsuie shares her journey becoming Miss Navajo Nation 2001/2002. As a young girl, she remembers moving away from the Navajo culture during her formative years as a high school student in Phoenix. Her mother understood, however, that one day she would come back and she did. Two days after being selected as Miss Navajo Nation, September 11th happened and she spent the next year representing the Navajo Nation across the country. As Miss Navajo, she shared what it meant to be a Navajo woman. She was the representation of her mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, and communicated the importance of knowing who you are as an individual. Today, she teaches urban Navajos to keep their language and be proud of their roots, to ensure the survival of their language and culture. Shakira's Speech at the swearing-in Ceremony for the White House Initiative on Ed. Exc for Hispanics
http://www.shakira.com Being here today is a tremendous honor for me. I am thankful to President Obama and I am humbled that my philanthropic experience could be helpful in some measure and can be used to amplify the message and work of the President and this Commission. Latino youth are the fastest-growing group in America, and more Latino children are living in poverty than children of any other racial or ethnic group. For a number of reasons, young Latinos in this country disproportionately drop out of school and far too few finish college. And as I have seen in my own Foundation work, the only road out of poverty is education - of that I am convinced. Investing in the educational achievement for Latinos will not only determine the economic future and competitiveness of this nation, but can serve as a model for the world. I hope that through my appointment to this commission, I will be able to share what I've learned through the 15 years I have been involved in the education of Latino children. I am sure you will agree with me that race and ethnicity shouldn't be factors in the success of any child. It is my belief and its also been demonstrated that if we provide early childhood education to Latino children it would take less than a decade to reap the benefits since investment in early education is proven to generate the fastest returns to the state. With more ECD programs there will be less Latino students being held back, less dropouts and less crime involving school-age children; and they will be more productive individuals to society. Its proven that most Latino kids who drop out of school and perform poorly in high school didn't have access to an early childhood education and lacked essential attention, stimulation and nutrition during the first 6 years of their lives. Therefore, it is clear that the most powerful avenue for boosting academic achievement is improving the basic academic skills of children before kindergarten. The Obama administration has made a point to improve Latino education and -- as I spoke to the President previously -- I am extremely passionate about working with the White House to plan an early childhood education summit in the coming year. Latinos are the largest minority group in this country and as the Latino population grows, the U.S. economy becomes more and more dependent on its success. Americans must better understand the impact that the growing Latino population is having on the way we live today and on this nations future. Inevitably this country and its economic prosperity will also largely depend on our Hispanic kids. There is no doubt that the future of the United States is inextricably tied to the future of the Latino community here and the education of its youth. Thank you again, this is a great honor for me, I am so happy to be here.

Joey Quits (worker quits hotel job with a marching band)
This is a video about supporting unions and workers' rights. https://www.twitter.com/joeyquits and https://instagram.com/laneve__ After a long, long fight, workers at this hotel have finally won the right to organize a union: https://pbn.com/Renaissance-Providence-Hotel-workers-vote-to-join-union,110150/ Visit https://www.joeyquits.com to hear stories from other hotel and restaurant workers. (We've since shut down the site but you can still view old posts and stories from hotel workers). Press Inquiries: joeldefrancesco@gmail.com FAQ: 1. Q: Why is your name bleeped out but you have your real name in your username? A: When we first uploaded it I bleeped my name out and didn't have my real name on anything related to the video. Once it began to get popular, I realized I could do more by attaching my name to it than by hiding from it (see my website/other videos/etc.) Youtube doesn't allow you to reupload videos so the name is bleeped out even though I used my real name online now. 2. Q: Didn't you screw yourself? Now you'll never have a job you idiot. A: No, I've gotten several jobs since making this video. In fact, the attention from this video and the things I've channeled it toward have created more opportunities than I ever had before. Video of Joey La Neve DeFrancesco quitting the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel Filmed by Jori Ketten, featuring the What Cheer? Brigade http://www.whatcheerbrigade.com I want to give a little context for the many of you who don't know me: I worked in this hotel for 3.5 years. I worked while going to school full time to pay my tuition and living expenses. This was not a job I had for two weeks before quitting in a hissy-fit. The working conditions in the hotel are horrendous. In the kitchen, workers are regularly forced to work 10, 11, 14, 16 hour shifts that begin at 5:30AM and last well into the night. Housekeepers are reprimanded if they fail to clean 16 rooms or more in a 9 hour shift. Anyone who speaks up—especially anyone who is openly pro-union—is disciplined or fired. Managers, like Jared, scream down employees daily. I worked extremely hard to change the conditions in the hotel. My co-workers and I regularly organized ourselves to push back against management and demand respect. I was also one of many workers who led the fight to organize a formal union at the hotel. For legal reasons I must mention that this specific action was an individual decision and had nothing to do with the union. The hotel has yet to recognize our union, and they continue a vicious union-busting campaign. They punish and fire pro-union workers, spread lies in captive-audience meetings, and generally attempt to scare the workers out of joining the union. Still, through just being organized and threatening to form a union, we've won countless victories, including raises, new uniforms, lower housekeeper room quotas, etc. This video a bit of performance art highlighting the struggle at the Renaissance Providence Hotel and hotels throughout the country. © Copyright 2011 Joey La Neve DeFrancesco All rights reserved Contact: joeldefrancesco@gmail.com best job quit. job quitting. quits job marching band. musical quit. Change the Way You Think About Food
How do we balance the needs of a growing population with a finite planet? By the year 2050, our planet will be home to another 2 billion people. How will we feed them all? Not only will there be more people, but everyone will have more money to spend on food. Where, on an increasingly crowded planet, will we grow all of it? Picture what would happen if we could freeze the footprint of food by doubling the productivity of farming. Change the way you think: http://worldwildlife.org/pages/change-the-way-you-think

Child Mortailty, Family Planning & the Environment | Hans Rosling | TEDxChange
In this animated version of his talk from TEDxChange, Hans Rosling discusses Millennium Development Goal #5: Reduction in child mortality rate of two-thirds by 2015. Dr. Rosling highlights progress happening in Africa and the need to measure each country individually. Professor Hans Rosling, co-founder of the Gapminder Foundation, debunked the myth that little progress has been made toward the MDGs—especially in Africa—by using his infamous bubble graphs and enthusiasm for numbers to illustrate the notable successes in Ghana and Kenya in lowering child mortality. TEDxTucson - James MacAdam - Green Streets of Tucson
Tucson was once the home of the nation's "Most Ugly Street", so we set about to change that in many innovative ways. James MacAdam takes us for a tour of Tucson and shows us what our streets look like through "muffin tin glasses" and how we can improve the way we capture water in such a hot and dry environment. People come from all over the world to learn rainwater harvesting techniques and permaculture methods from James and his Tucson colleagues. We've become innovators and world leaders in rainwater harvesting out of necessity, and its inspiring to see the living environment of entire neighborhoods be beautifully transformed by the people who live there. James is a writer, teacher and advocate for sustainable communities. He currently manages Tucson-based nonprofit Watershed Management Group's program to spread the use of green infrastructure throughout the US Southwest through community-based approaches. James has led corporate sustainability programs, led award-winning community development projects, and writes for the monthly The New Southwest. In his work and writing, he brings a unique perspective to the field of sustainability that values both individuals' and communities' inner and outer dimensions. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxTucson, where x = independently organized TED event. Water Changes Everything.
Almost a billion people live without clean drinking water. We call this the water crisis. It's a crisis because it only starts with water -- but water affects everything in life. Health. Education. Food security. And the lives of women and children, especially. We can end the water crisis in our lifetime. But first we have to let everyone know it's happening. Learn how water changes everything -- and share this with everyone you know. Paul Butler: Profiled on My Own Street
In May 2011, The Atlantic Philanthropies and The New Press (http://thenewpress.com/) hosted a discussion about racial profiling in the United States. Racial profiling stigmatises and criminalises people of colour from as early as their pre-teens, violates the rights and civil liberties of innocent people, and has devastating consequences on entire communities. The fascinating panel included former litigator and law professor Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, and former federal prosecutor and law professor Paul Butler, author of Let's Get Free: A Hip-Hop Theory of Justice. Kent Hutchinson and Justin Coello, two young men who have been racially profiled in their neighbourhoods, also gave firsthand accounts of their experiences. In this video excerpt, Paul Butler talks about being racially profiled in his neighbourhood and on his front porch. You can read more about the event or watch the full discussion here: http://www.atlanticphilanthropies.org/learning/video-racial-profiling-post-racial-america
