I had a black dog, his name was depression

04:19
At its worst, depression can be a frightening, debilitating condition. Millions of people around the world live with depression. Many of these individuals and their families are afraid to talk about their struggles, and don't know where to turn for help. However, depression is largely preventable and treatable. Recognizing depression and seeking help is the first and most critical towards recovery. In collaboration with WHO to mark World Mental Health Day, writer and illustrator Matthew Johnstone tells the story of overcoming the "black dog of depression". More information on the book can be found here: http://matthewjohnstone.com.au/ For more information on mental health, please visit: http://www.who.int/topics/mental_health/en/ Disclaimer: This video may contain links and references to third party-websites. Compassion and Kinship: Fr Gregory Boyle at TEDxConejo 2012

20:39
Father Gregory Boyle, founder and executive director of Homeboy Industries, is an acknowledged expert on gangs, intervention and re-entry and today serves on the U.S. Attorney General's Defending Childhood Task Force. Born in Los Angeles, one of eight children, Fr. Greg worked in the family-owned dairy, loading milk trucks to earn his high school tuition. An enduring memory of that youthful time is when "...these weathered old truckers would come up to me, put their arms around me and point at my father in the distance, on the loading dock, and say, 'Your dad is a great man.'" Lessons from that first job apply at Homeboy Industries today where employees come to change for themselves and their children. Homeboy Industries traces its roots to "Jobs For A Future" (JFF), created in 1988 by Boyle at Dolores Mission. To address the escalating problems of gang-involved youth, he and the community developed an elementary school, day care program and sought legitimate employment for young people. Boyle serves on the National Gang Center Advisory Board (Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention). He is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Loyola Law School Center for Juvenile Law and Policy and previously served on the California Commission on Juvenile Justice, Crime and Delinquency Prevention. The National Child Labor Committee recognized Fr. Greg with the first Nancy M. Daly Advocacy Award for Service to Children and Youth on January 30, 2012. Homeboy Industries, now located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, is recognized as a national and international model for youth seeking to move beyond gangs and achieve a life of hope. homeboy-industries.org ABOUT TEDx About TEDx: x=independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self- organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Why you have to fail to have a great career: Michael Litt at TEDxUW

10:29
http://tedxuw.com/speakers Some people start their careers slowly, while others start with a bang. Michael Litt's case is definitely the latter: the serial entrepreneur's first venture comprising the import and re-sale of firecrackers to his fifth-grade classmates. But if the story were to be told from beginning to end, Litt would be the first to admit that his path has actually involved a number of "bangs" -- including some which didn't quite work out in his favour -- a fair number of nervous moments, and lot of plain, old-fashioned hard work. Early in his university career, Michael looked to be heading down a path familiar to many Waterloo engineers, securing co-op placements at Research in Motion -- but it's what he accomplished after his first couple of years that made him stand out as a talented entrepreneur. After a spell as a day- trader, an aborted attempt at running a biodiesel refinery (during which he once used a bathroom hand dryer to un-freeze a jar of biodiesel minutes before a sales pitch), and an anonymous stint publishing a highlytrafficked blog which featured teardowns of new phones, Litt was focused on building revenue and he knew he wanted to start a business. Fortunately, one of Litt's trades had put a little money in his pocket, and, with a little help from the subprime mortgage market, he was able to purchase a house and fill it with other budding entrepreneurs. This environment, now known as Batavia House, fostered the drive and motivation he needed to take the next step, and it wasn't long before he founded his current company, Vidyard, an organization helping businesses and individuals easily and effectively host videos on their websites. A Waterloo native, Michael believes in the region's ability to attract and retain talent, and believes the local tech industry will only continue to grow. As it grows, Litt will continue to be an interested observer, albeit one with the experience to back up his words. "It's really interesting to see how things are developing," he says, "especially since my failures have defined my career and current position." It's an outlook that's bound to be part of any discussion about the future -- a discussion that Litt hopes to be a part of at TEDxUW. -- In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Disability and Child Protection | UNICEF

01:24
Stigma, ignorance, neglect, superstition and communication barriers for children with disabilities are among the social factors that explain their discrimination and isolation from society. Subscribe to UNICEF here: http://bit.ly/1ltTE3m Disability is a social issue -- it results from the interaction between people with "long-term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others" (Article 1, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability). It is not the impairment itself, but rather attitudes and environmental barriers that result in disability. Children with disabilities are often 'invisible' to service providers and they are at greater risk of violence than their non-disabled peers. Children with disabilities are often disproportionately placed in alternative care, rather than remaining with their families. These raise concerns for their protection. UNICEF's strategy is to promote the recognition of all children as full members of society and the respect for all of their rights without any discrimination. We work with partners to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities into society by stimulating changes in attitudes and practices of the general public and service providers toward children with disabilities. Further, UNICEF works with governments to help ensure that family members of persons with disabilities, who are often the primary caretakers, and children with disabilities themselves, receive assistance from the State for disability-related expenses, adequate training, counselling, financial assistance and respite care. We also support efforts to ensure that all programmes, including recreational programmes, public services, facilities and relevant buildings are accessible. Is life really that complex? | Hannah Fry | TEDxUCL

10:09
Hannah Fry trained as a mathematician, and completed her PhD in fluid dynamics in early 2011. After a brief period working as an aerodynamicist in the motorsport industry, she came back to UCL to work on a major interdisciplinary project in complexity science. The project spans several departments, including Mathematics and the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, and focuses on understanding global social systems -- such as Trade, Migration and Security. Hannah's research interests revolve around creating new mathematical techniques to study these systems, with recent work including studies of the London Riots and Consumer Behaviour. Talk: Is life really that complex? Recently scientists have begun to appreciate that many of the mechanisms inherent in our social systems have analogies in seemingly unrelated problems. The movement of a crowd, for instance, can be understood using techniques traditionally applied to the flow of a fluid, and the uptake of a new technology can be predicted using knowledge of how disease spreads. By exploiting these analogies, a new field is emerging at the interface between social sciences and mathematics, the potential of which I hope to illustrate using a mathematical model of the London Riots. Our approach can demonstrate why certain areas of the city were at higher risk than others and help determine which policing strategies may have resulted in a swifter resolution to the unrest. We will discuss how social modelling can provide a greater understanding of our society, and help design better systems for all: from healthcare to policing and policy. TEDxBoulder - Shannon Paige - Mindfulness and Healing

16:53
Shannon Paige is a writer, sacred activist, dedicated Yoga teacher. She is also the founder of Om Time Yoga Center and the styles of Bhava Vinyasa for Depression and Anxiety and Anjali Restorative Yoga. Shannon battled with cervical cancer ferociously....and won. Although she had survived, the battle with depression, especially the pressure and anxiety of how she should feel "lucky" for having survived, nearly crippled her. She narrates how many people, after surviving life threatening circumstances, are also robbed of the ability to smile for real, the ability to connect, and the ability to hope. "Depression is hard. Depression is gross. And Depression is Mean." A doctor stepped in and told her to get back into her body, volunteer, and do yoga. For Shannon, the battle with depression was actually as hard as battling cancer. Through this, Shannon discovers that while, yoga can't heal depression, getting into your body can change the mind and create a state of empowerment, stability, and release.

Five great revolutions have shaped political culture over the past 50 years, says theorist Ivan Krastev. WHO: Saving mother's and children's lives

02:57
Produced in August 2011, this video highlights that every year, an estimated 360 000 women die in pregnancy and childbirth and around 8 million children die before their fifth birthday. Millions can be saved if the right health care is available. WHO's department of maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health: • generates and collect the latest evidence • sets global standards • helps to make treatments more affordable and effective • provides guidance on delivering the best possible care • designs training materials to give health workers the skills they need; and • helps countries to get the right policies and programmes in place, and monitor progress. Help us to make sure that women and children everywhere enjoy their right to health. (music in this video was kindly produced by Laurent Apffel/Lenz Music)

The neurobiology of beauty | Semir Zeki | TEDxUCL

13:07
Professor Semir Zeki is Professor of Neuroesthetics at UCL. He pioneered the study of the higher visual areas of the brain, and discovered the specialization of different visual areas for different visual attributes such as colour, form and motion, and hence the functional specialization within the visual brain. He has recently expanded his work to enquire into the neural correlates of aesthetic and artistic experience. He has exhibited his own art in Milan, is a Fellow of the Royal Society, and a recipient of the Aristotle Medal (2011) among others. Talk: The Neurobiology of Beauty Have you ever wondered, as you gaze at something beautiful, exactly what it is that makes it beautiful? Do all things which you experience as beautiful have a single defining characteristic? Indeed, could you even write a definition of beauty itself? The great Irish polymath, Edmund Burke, described beauty as "for the greater part, some quality in bodies acting mechanically upon the human mind through the intervention of the senses". I will explore Burke's definition from a neurobiological perspective and show that there is a single fundamental characteristic to the experience of beauty, one which is independent of culture, education and ethnic background. Moreover, a neurobiological interpretation of Burke's "intervention of the senses" also gives a brain-based explanation for why the search for the nature of beauty has been so elusive. Beyond Environmental Refuge: Robert McLeman at TEDxUOttawa

10:21
"Beyond environmental refugees: How climate change will affect the world's (human) migration patterns -- Scientists and security agencies warn that hundreds of millions will become environmental refugees in coming decades, forced by climate change to flee their homes and communities in the face of food shortages, water scarcity, rising sea levels, and extreme weather events. Events like these can and do cause people to migrate in search of safety, but the impacts of climate change on global migration patterns will felt on much larger scales and for more subtle reasons. The number of people who migrate voluntarily to seek job opportunities or to diversify household income sources will skyrocket as households adapt to the impacts of climate change specific to their home region. For those of us living in the potential destinations of these new migrants, the goal is not to prevent them from coming, but to innovate migration programs and policies that benefit sending and receiving areas alike."
