Mark Mattson is the current Chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging. He is also a professor of Neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University. Mattson is one of the foremost researchers in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. Hi, I just started IF 16 /8 however in the eating window I cannot eat the required calories, as I am not that hungry after the second meal. However we need the minimum whatever calories so our body can function. I can't even eat that in the 8 hour eating window. I am vegan. Any ideas? Thanks

Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) said "If you khow all benefits of fasting you will fast every day all the year around". It is obligatory for muslims to fast each day during one sacred month. And desirable to fast each monday and thursday.

ppl increase life spans of animals by reducing energy intake! fasting is good for brains. plato said he fasted for physical and mental efficiency! fasting gives you a metabolism shift, glycogen storage in liver ussually takes 12 hours to deplete but ususally never does with 3 meals a day unless you excercise. glycogen when fasting burns and you produce ketone bodies which are very good for your brain! if you eat only within 8 hour time period, evidence shows this time window it will have health benefits, long enough to shift the energy metabolism! fasting bolsters brain power. in development and in adults nuerons are generated from stem cells grow out axons and dendrites and form connection and communicate. brain ages sometimes succesffuly and in tact, others don't and gain diseases. Fasting is a challenge and brain responds by activating adaptive stress response pathways and cope with disease. this guys asks does it make sense evolutionary, why does it happen? you don't want your brain to shut down if you are hungry. some of these changes also happens with excercise. Hard excercise is a challenge! When you get done you feel great. both excercise and fasting intermittent both increase nuerotrofic proteins in the brains. f jeff promote connections of nuerons and connection of synapsis! fgf and bdnf both grow! cognitive challenges! it can create new nerve cells from hyppocampus. Romans would starve ppl with epiletic. Ketone suppress epileptic seizures. Ketone give alt. fuel and boost energy for nuerons. bdnf can increase mitochondria in nerve cells. nuerons help form more energy! more mitochondria helps nuerons form and create synapsis to form memories. fasting helps nerve cells restore dna! intelectual challenges also. oxidating stress cells repare oxidated damage to dna! theres alot of money in eating 3 times a day! pharmacuetical companies can lose money if ppl are healthy! communication is to improve health. says we use tax payer money, we don't have a profit motive. this is research not done by pharmacuetical industry. its like excercising, you can get used to it like fasting! the days you dont eat you can be more productive!

I fast most of the week , my first meal is around lunch down to 2:30 pm - 17- 19 hours don’t feel hungry at all - not have processed sugars - do have plenty of water and various teas - fantastic results in work productivity and weight lose.

Great information but poor delivery. I have been doing intermittent fasting for a couple of weeks now, and I love it. It makes my life so much easier. The benefits of it trump any hunger pangs, and I can see myself living like this long term. The amount of money and time I'm saving, not to mention the gradual weight loss and my minor digestive issues all magically disappearing within a day of fasting. It's been great! Although I can't confirm what all the other people are saying about mental clarity and energy. The first week I really did feel great but now I feel how I did prior to fasting (mentally and mood wise). Overall though, it's been worth it. It's easier and cheaper than any other "diet" out there. If you're on the fence about fasting, GO FOR IT!

thing is, when we eat full meals, it alters and changes both our mental states and our brain chemicals depending what we eat, and how much we eat, so if we limit what we eat, we free our minds from these chemical changes to can occur during the new chemical transitions of the new meals our body absorbs

bcmasur, I water fasted for 1 week. It's not as tough as I thought it would be. Next time I wanna do two weeks. The toughest part was the low energy levels between days 3 & 6. I remember on the 7th day, my energy levels were much higher than usual, that I actually exercised (which I'm not supposed to do while fasting). The body is stronger than most people think.

I believe that there may be many benefits to calorie restrictive diets, but this guy scares me a bit. He does not need to skip any more meals. Wherever it was he intended to go with this, I believe he has arrived. It's over...have a sandwich man!

I was a type 2 diabetic. Until I heard about intermittent fasting I can say from my experience it works wonders in 3 months I went from 209 lbs to 172 lb ....cut soda eat healthy and go on 2 or 3 bike rides a week it was a program that put my diabetes into remission in 3 months no meds no finger pricking it works wonders I did the 8 / 16 diet and it changed my life

It's completely obvious to anyone following an IF diet that the food industry, the pharma industry and Republican lawmakers who are invested in those industries are all AGAINST a healthy society. A healthy society doesn't purchase excess amounts of food, or eat massive amounts of calories. A healthy society doesn't stay on pharmas. A healthy society doesn't need expensive health care. By doing IF you are part of the Resistance. Count me as part of that Resistance.

I confess that my hand had started to shake in the past. I tried to deny it. I used to fast a lot, somehow I stopped. I started to fast this year, plus getting rid of sugar and the shaking is gone.Aleluyah

So what causes my hypoglycemia? Sometimes it doesn't bother me and sometimes it does badly. I know it is nutritionally related, but WHICH vitamin or mineral? I upped my greens and quit caffeine and now I rarely get hypoglycemia. So, is it B9 or magnesium? Btw, many people on CR diets also fast, esp. the 8 hour fast.

I just today finished a four day fast and have never gone this long without food and also, have not felt so good in many years. BTW, I am an epileptic and have noticed a noted decrease in my seizure disorder. This guy couldn't be more right about this topic.

if eating 3 meals a day change to 2. if eating 2 meals a day chane to 1. if eating one meal a day skip one meal a week. point being no matter where you are you can take small achievable steps to save money, time and improve you health. hard to argue with that.

The science overwhelmingly reveals that the typical diet of three meals a day plus snacks is an unhealthy eating pattern but intermittent fasting is not promoted because of the profit motive. The food and pharmaceutical industries are going to lose money. There is no money to be made on healthy people. So you have to ask yourself a question, is your health more important than the profits of the advertising, food and pharmaceutical industries.

Makes a lot of sense we would have been active in the hunt and gather mode during the more part of evolution and not as lazy as the last few thousand years. We're probably designed to be at our best when hungry and to then activate our brain to be able to best hunt and track down to survive. Hunting is natures exercising and the body at peak performance to survive. This would have been a regular occurrence much more than a modern day in forests etc. Think could possibly the time the body gets rid of and pushes out all the bad stuff. But like time to empty the recycled bins. Ppl won't like fasting on the mass of course because look at them got an obvious society. Should compare this study on the poor countries that can't eat all the time compared to USA.

If fasting puts the body under stress and that is what causes all the good changes, the body adapting to the stress of no food, wouldn't that effect wear off as the body becomes used to not receiving food for the longer time? Thus making IF a short term solution for a more active brain and body?
