Alison Ledgerwood joined the Department of Psychology at UC Davis in 2008 after completing her PhD in social psychology at New York University. She is interested in understanding how people think, and how they can think better. Her research, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, investigates how certain ways of thinking about an issue tend to stick in people's heads. Her classes on social psychology focus on understanding the way people think and behave in social situations, and how to harness that knowledge to potentially improve the social world in which we all live.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. The economy around the 2008 Subprime Mortgage Crisis isn't a particularly good example. Although the stock market bounced back, most of the gains returned to the more affluent bracket, where the much more populous middle-middle and lower-middle classes languished with their reduced spending power. So to most of us, the recovery matches the consumer outlook graph Alison presented.
That _may_ have to do with the negativity attitude-polarization Dr. Ledgerwood suggests, but it also correlates with the common real experience Americans have faced in the aftermath of the 2008 crisis without that bias.
Interesting talk but it focused on studies demonstrating a transfer from positive thinking to negative, without also showing corresponding studies that demonstrate what led from negative thinking to positive thinking. I would really like to learn more about evidence based approaches to enhancing positive thinking.
One of the most practical video I have ever seen so far about topic. Feels better to know that I m not pessimistic, it's the way our brain is wired to survive. But we give more importance to these initial negative thoughts which our brain generated to keep us safe, and in turn damage our brain. Best and only one way out is not to stuck and intentionally move out with due effort from negatively towards positivity. Superb 👌 lesson learnt. Thank u so much. 😀
She lost me at her opening statement about being a social psychologist. Her job is watching people. She is going to tell us how to think. Three statements which taken together seem to make no sense whatsoever. Pass.
I try so hard but I cannot think of a single going well in my life or a single thing I am grateful for. People tell me I should be happy to be alive but I don't see why. Being alive is just something that happens, I have not done a thing to earn it. Mold on the ground is alive, so just by existing, I am only on the level of mold. It's nothing I've accomplished. Its not good enough for me.
This so such a great message! To often we get fixated on the negatives of a situation we fail to see the positive. Practicing gratitude to help you navigate the tough situations has helped me tremendously.
Like the speech but all her "E"s sounds like"A"s. I wish I didn't hear things like these. When people say oways instead of always or when people say there is when there are is grammatically correct. Yeah I know how annoying I sound. Wish I didn't care about grammer. Or death.
Not even 30 seconds in and I can already tell you're going to have this extreme bias that doesn't include the entire picture. You won't bring up mental health, which has a huge impact on how people are able to perceive negativity.

I love the idea of rewiring my mind for a positive viewpoint. This means I can create my life just by teaching myself to think about things differently. Thank you for doing these studies and talking about them.
If our minds tend to stick to the negative more, wouldnt there be a reason for that i dont think she explained that part. What if theres an important biological reason for sticking to the negatives. Maybe sometimes its more important to put the negative on ur top priority to think abt it in case of emergencies and consequences
I look at this cus my mom love my older brother more and my bad memory of how he hits me and she always did nothing even when we were fight I got wrong an people bilve in what he say and like him more than me am in his shadow and don't have friends cuz they all like my brother more not only that but my whole family to am biger and have more muscle than him and they say things about me it get stuck In my head an I ask myself if it true they don't want me to shine but I no longer going to be held back by them but I will try to keep going but I forgive them cuz I have a good Hart but they keep wishing me bad
I wonder if this comes out of a survival instinct that has evolved in our brains as a species. IE: It's much more important from a survival perspective for us to be able to process and focus on the negative and so our brains are better at it. More important for early man to be aware of, and take quick steps to deal with, the tiger that is about to eat him, rather than focusing on what a wonderful day he is having. More important to be aware of and process the storm that is coming than the good weather, the enemy's response than a friends, etc. We are hardwired that way for a reason. So we have to consciously reverse our wiring in cases that don't involve survival. (In which modern mankind finds themselves so much more often than early mankind.) Great video!

getting stuck in improbable negative outcomes can seriously affect your business. If you focus on whats wrong instead of whats right you kind of get what you focus on. Can you ask a better question? What are the strengths of my business? how can i improve procedures? how do my actions effect other people? am i thinking in short term gains? are these gains having a negative long term effect on my business? just food for thought.....
As much as I can't deny facts, I feel like the way school is setup is to analyse things, criticise things, object to things, spot problems. Rarely are you asked for positive input. It's almost a culture of thinking.
How do you deal with another's critical or insulting (negative) expressive words and he/she makes you angry? Let that person, any person, know your anger; your feelings, as freely as you want, do not hold back..express your anger openly, freely, as consciously as you are able to, ..express .
Thank you.... :) negativity stucks because our mind designed to keep us safe... to survive... when we face failures mind acts like it harms us... so it prevents us from doing that thing... it keep reminding us that we should not do this... that's why it get stuck.... this is my analogy and i am an overthinker.... it always happens with me... i can't get calm easily once I experience something that I hate ..
I had this problem for a long time I failed my lifeguard test twice and I finally got it the third time but I still was focused on the fact that it took me so long to pass it and was still depressed, rumination is also the reason why I didn't pass the first two times

I was fortunate to be introduced to CBT in my later 20's, which partly was responsible for saving my life. I later became a psychotherapist so I could help others like me learn skills to feel better.
