Greetings from Morroco Mister Bill Gates!

Although it is comforting to see the video and think about that data and how it actually lays out evidence that we are getting better, it is a pretty simplistic and human-centric approach. The world isn't getting better. There's no point in having the best time to be a 5 years old child if there's no fresh air to breath, if species are dying by thousands, if the water is getting polluted with chemicals, if the world is heating up at a pace that is going to make life unsustainable. Life isn't getting any better, we are destroying our planet. We increased the life expectancy only to have more of us polluting the planet and consuming way more. Now, I don't think we should go back to the past, but the fact that we have made improvements in our life means that we should be more responsible of our impact and we haven't learnt a single thing so far.

I honestly don't care much for the homo sapiens.. Show me the data how our environment and ecosystem is deteriorating. Poverty and education is a social construction. How about we focus on what is really happening to us all.

Bill Gates was one of my heroes growing up, still is. Not because he's rich and smart but because he cares about humans. I have so much respect for the ultra rich who vow to donate the vast majority of their wealth and actually participate in philanthropic work. This stuff gives me some hope for my species.

Easy to say when you have a billion dollars and you weren't exactly moral when you started your company. One could say anti-consumer, monopolistic and money hungry. No matter of feel good rose tinted out of context lies will fix that. When people sitting on billions of dollars don't exist then I could say our world is better and yes I know he is going to "donate" his money to charity when he dies. But if you look at the stats only 2/10 people have ever carried out with this and those 2 did so only for tax reasons and not that much wealth. He knows that his estate will go like nah we don't want to give away that much money. It's literally a long con.

I wrote an essay for my English Communication class during my 2nd year in university. The essay was titled "The relationship between education and morality"---in which I argue that people who receives higher education also attains higher level of morality and virtues, and vice versa. It turns out this topic is very polarising with most people dismissing my argument as being nonsense, biased, discriminating, or negative generalisation (poor and uneducated people are crooks and rich and well off college graduates are angels---that's the picture I drew) But after reading my essay, my British English teacher went to the Dean and consulted with him on giving me the "Royal Scholarship" but I made the mistaken choice of dropping out of college to do business little after that (which didn't go so well after a few years) I wished the people who make this video report could read that extended essay because it was so in line with what they're projecting here.

I like the focus of this video. Old people in the US should be the target audience of the next video like this (this is nice but hard to follow visually for older people). I think many elderly people believe that the world had turned into a hellscape before Trump. They need to be reminded of the global improvements that have happened during their lifetimes.

I think things are fluid- slowly everything improves but historically there have often been significant steps backwards.. kinda like antiquity's health "system" of doctors, unbiased medical observations and public baths vs medieval times severe elitism, superstitious practices and scarcity of water to wash oneself which led to the biggest Plagues. Nowadays, I think the western world is taking a tiny step back in terms of standards of living. E.g. if one has visited, lets say Greece back in mid 2000s and again now in 2018 they'd feel justifiably upset. I never thought a EU country with such history, literally the heart of EU historically can end up trying to make ends meet. No heating in winter (I was freezing in a hospital), you see everywhere businesses closed and Ive seen old ppl begging on the streets while you wouldnt see one beggar 10+ yrs ago.. It made me realize that nothing in the western world is to be taken for granted and I also felt disturbed that this would happen in Europe.. Instead of Eastern Europe improving, seeing Southern Europe esp Greece and Portugal... contract makes one question everything - EU, USA, capitalism, health policies, investments, how untouchable our own reality is?

Most of those figures are reduced crime and malicious-ness. Not vaca'cines. Or medical miracles. There are fewer 120's today than there were in the 1800s. ~ Hydrogenation, PalmOil, Coconut Oil, without triple quadruple double bypasses and all sorts of things, the life expectancy today is actually less than in was in the 1800s. But then my perspective is affected by 1933 social security. My grandpa was in his 87 year and murdered. He grew up with lard and hardwork, never had a any heart work, but also had less physical wear on him from owning a 1909 tractor. ~ When it comes to standards I know for a fact the quality of both food and fabric is lower today than when he was born. Even if the comfort of nuclear Electricity & On Land petroleum since 1909 and 1973 have eased Comfort for å Higher percentage. Seneca ~ it is no great feat to be better than the worst. To have boosted the bottom, the quality known to the top has been reduced and the tops have birthed fewer kids than the bottom. ~ the Free & Accepted Mason secret is the bottom 65% gets to flip over the top 35% and replace them, and a majority is raised according to the lie that this is the natural order of life. The best must die out as Evolution replaces prices and progress back pressure with the species that bravely rushes ahead. My 1907 grandpa murdered at 87, My 1937 dad dead if not for triple bypass in his 60s now in his 80th.

I do not agree that the world is a better place today. It is true that the infant mortality has been brought down , also the life expectancy has gone up. GOOD. However there is a growing disparity between the Rich and the poor. iT is a fact that the Rich are getting super rich . Middle class it si mixed . However the majority of the world population is in the poorest category. While the Rich consume a lunch for even $ 20 , you will find poor cannot afford even a 10 cent Lunch in many african and asian countries. Land distribution is uneven .In countries in the middle east , south asia there is a constant unrest between countries. Inter religion conflicts are rising. The corruption continues unabated in many counries. There is uncontrolled proliferation of nuclear devices.THe terrorism is at is peak. There is a acute shortage of water in many countries. the atmosphere is polluted.with these facts I do not agree that the world is moving towards a better tomorrow
Viviane B (2 месяца назад)
One way that we can help the developing countries is to pay fair, better wages for their services and products. One reason why there's so much poverty in Africa is because we take their resources for stupid low prices while the nations there are barely getting enough to eat. As a result of this and lack of education and access to the bare minimum of quality of living many citizens there are destroying the animals to the point of extinction and also killing each other. I'd love if Bill (and others) could voice on that as he is a great influencer for many.

We are going to need disclosure on when AI is being used on us. This is the job of Microsoft and other internet browsers. We are going to need regulation that allows us to opt in or opt out of sending and receiving AI through our networks. Then they are going to have to tier levels (with certificates) of AI because their is some being used by major corporations that are obviously beneficial. From day one of the sell of AI has been the elephant in the room of "smarter criminals" using AI to hack and commit cyber crimes. Those types of criminals reduce their smart tech to nothing but a magic trick. Because, it is possible to oppress someone online with AI. See the potential of this creating an artificial environment or market...where you think that you are doing business but it is really like a mirage? That could be used as a combination of deception (Gharrar) and oppression (Zalim). Although not everyone would use it in that way. But, of course, there is just the matter of the ones that would. https://youtu.be/lXUQ-DdSDoE
Claudia Caetano (2 месяца назад)
Thats good news and it's important to celebrate and remind it mainly in the tech field, in the other hand unfortunately we can't say the same on the nature field with all its issues including climate changing, animal extinction, animal welfare (I heard a few steps that was took like meat analogue, mock meat?!). We need bring this to the table and take some serious actions about it. We've never seen in the past worst scenery to the nature like it is today.

Our World is Data is one of my favorite sites! So glad it exists. But in my opinion the world is getting better only if we at the data through the lens of humanism. Only us are living longer and doing better while the rest of the planet is doing worse and is viewed simply as resources. But I guess it's normal for a species to consider only it's own needs.

I follow closely OurWorldInData and Gates Notes, but I have to say that this video is very one sided. That's all from the perspective of people. The cost of this happening is not addressed as well, which is usually associated with out planet, where these charts are pretty much upside down. Just as an example: looking at CO2 emissions compared with people getting out of extreme poverty (inverse correlation).

Has our sudden awareness made us overly depressed? Is it that we are good people and suffer hurt and anguish when shown the pain in the world? Is it a form of recency bias multiplied by our constant information consumption that moves us beyond the limits of our sanity? For sure today the world is a much better place to live in than many years ago. It's still not perfect and overall isn't it better? Then why do we feel such pessimism and such anxiety when we think of the future? Or are we looking too far back and seeing a much worse off world when had we looked back only a little lesser, we ought to have seen a better world? Did things start deteriorating somewhere and that is what strikes our mind as disturbing? Are things today better than a century ago but worse than a decade ago? And is they are worse now than a decade ago but better than a century ago, is it really all right? Shouldn't things today be as good as they should be? Maybe 90% perfect but 100% of as perfect as they can be today, and 90% of as good as they'll be tomorrow. No wastage, no senseless loss, no preventable catastrophe now and even lesser from now on? Just a theory, a thought nugget for tonight.
