How to Read a Book a Day | Jordan Harry | TEDxBathUniversity

Оценок: 22790 | Просмотров: 569035
After a childhood speech impediment left him struggling to read, Jordan learned strategies from world leading speed readers to dramatically enhance his reading ability. Jordan now helps others unleash their potential to learn anything faster. Because he knew that spending hours reading books and watching seminars was not as effective as it could be. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

The actual challenge is speed reading. but speed thinking. When we read a book with heavy content, we need to think in order to really understand the content. Why reading it fast if you cannot comprehend the content of the book.

Reading 1 book per day is useless. Reading book is about context and understanding. Human bean literally can not absorb whole book every day.

I already met few fast readers in my life. All of them was ignorands. But of course, it can be random.

Research on attention, shows that re-echoing to yourself, ought to deepen one's attention to the latter. And do we read for speed or comprehention?

I am sick of this kind of videos. Some sort of people always have some sort of miraculous technique to read something very fast, learn 100 Instruments in a week and so on. Open mindset? Yeah, of course. But if this is possible why don't you go to public schools and teach it, push it?
Jordan Harry (4 дня назад)
Sorry you are sick of this type of video. And I currently teach in high schools, colleges, universities and corporate environments- I'll keep pushing it and employing others to keep impacting thousands!

I am an English language and literature teacher with an MA who has explored the art of memory and accelerated learning for 30 years, including the speed "reading" that this speaker promotes. The fact the put "reading" in quotes should give you my professional opinion on the matter. Speed reading is, at best, systematic skimming. I'm not dismissing it completely. Skimming is a good pre-reading skill to have. I teach it to my students. But it's not reading. I'm sorry to deflate the speed "readers" out there, but stop deluding yourselves.

I appreciate him, and having nothing to his person but after I tryed speed reading for years I can say that isn't possible. There are scientific research that affirm subvocalization is necessary for comprehension. Regression is also necessary. And we cannot process more than one word at time. Speed reading and growing comprehension with that techniques is impossible.

@2:18 He begins his strategy for how to read a book per day. This is a general overview of what is called pre-reading. I first became familiar with the practice after reading (and rereading) "How to Read a Book." Look it up. Another thing mentioned in that book, which this gentleman contradicts, is that one should not read all type and genres of the book at the same speed or the same way.

1. reduce subvocalization A. press tip of tongue to the roof of the mouth B. Change your environment that is optimum (not too loud to distract and not too quiet to let mind wander) 2. reduce regression A. Improve concentration by being an active leader ( ask why before reading) B.. Gliding - cover the lines that you read to remove your safety net 3. fixations A. split the page into 3 columns and use your peripheral vision 1. Front and back cover 2. Table of contents 3.Skim (10 sec ea pg) 4.Scan (30 sec ea pg) Use one technique at a time such as gliding, bouncing, and visual aids

I would like to have a test on people that speed read. Isolate them for one hour or one day, whatever, and then test them on what they remember, and what depth of the prose they were able to come to. Then come and see them again a year later and see if they still know anything. I have spoken to people tat read a book decades before, and still remember it like yesterday. Can speed reading do that? I like to read deeply and become involved in the narrative if fiction, or if it is prose to learn, then I will reread a portion several times until I memorise it, fully comprehend it, and then move on. I think the only benefit to speed reading, is if something needs to be read in a hurry; such as pre an exam, where a quick scan may help in answering questions. In university, people had to read a book that would be discussed. Many went onto internet and read reviews or sites that gave info on the book. Yes this was enough to get involved in class discussions, but the critical deep engrossing value was not there, just some facts.

1500 words per min? Ah BS
john rogers (15 дней назад)
I agree, what's that, 25 words per second. Maybe scan over 1500 per minute, but not read each word and/or comprehend. I call BS too, unless proven otherwise. I do have an open mind. LISTEN ... This is not a thing. You don’t read a book a day and grow as an individual. This is a publisher’s DREAM that people will be whimsical and short-winded enough think they can digest powerful ideas and stories in 24 hour cycles by reading (and buying) a book a day. This is a pander to people who yearn for quick fixes and an easy-way up.

Simpler effective method: Firsts Method. Read entire first chapter. Read first paragraph of each chapter thereafter, and then just the first line of each subsequent paragraph (this, by definition, will include most dialogue as those are indented). Try to read a german philosophical book like this from the 18th century and you will fail big time. This does not work if you really want to understand something and get everything out of it. And of course, if you really really want to understand everything you have to learn german anyway. The translation will never do it.
Freud5709 (1 месяц назад)
I dont have Instagram, but thank you. If I don't subvocalize, I understand nothing at all. I tried so many times (I know about speed reading since 8 years). And now I already doubt... How can I really understand the reading, if I don't hear it within me, if I am not fully conscious of it? It's the same with thinking. If I dont think loud within me, I don't know, that I am even thinking. Call it subvocalization, but I do the same when I am thinking. How can I consciously think and at the same time don't think the words lout within me - it est subvocalizing the words?

I have read about 900 books in the span of about fifteen years. Almost all of it was scientific and humanitarian books, some classics, some obscure, none was crime novels. I am now of the opinion that if you have not found what you searched for after the first 100 books, there is no use looking further. I know now a good deal about the history of the Inca empire, the development of automatons, economic theory and how to do basic home repair. Yet I am not substantially richer in financial terms. It is not quantity, but relevance.

Well I watches this video took some notes. After the video ended I was looking for more videos and instinctively I started to read the description parts of the videos as well as the comments and It is actually very useful! It seems obvious but I never thought about doing that before. Nice!

Brilliant video. I struggled with reading until forcing myself to scan. Many information books chapters use pyramid style so once you get the gist of the chapter I found that scanning confirms the context and only slow down for outliers / exceptions to rules. I look forward to trying bouncing and using the skim and scan techniques.

diigest: in order: read the (front and back) cover to get title (which should say what the book is about in one phrase), author and his authority (skip the testimonials, they are chosen to be favourable), cover art (when done right) can visually indicate the the subject and content. read the table of contents to see what is in the book, this gives a more detailed understanding of what is in the book skim and scan 10~30s/page, just to look at what is in it, literary forms, typographic styles, figures/images, key information. this also helps you choose what is more important for you to read so that you can choose the order or reading and jump around however you feel is best. speed read, this is when you actually ingest and assimilate all the information in the order you decided on previously.

For most novels it's helpful to set yourself a limit to around one minute per page.
