What about people? If someone don't add value shall we get rid of the person.

I'm 52 and grew up through the capitalist 80's which meant owning a BMW, Rolex and a big house meant success. Today's younger people have a different and fresh ideology of what success really means which I admire because as they say, money will never equate happiness which in my older age 110% agree.

I wouldn't call myself a minimalist - far from it. HOWEVER … the greatest thing about getting older is that I question more if I REALLY need something. I find that I'm happier saving my money vs. spending it … and that I pretty much have what I need. I also am willing to spend MORE on something IF … BIG IF .. the quality is significantly better and will last me YEARS. I live WELL beneath my means and I pay most of my bills a year in advance and my pension / retirement numbers are solid. So there are aspects of minimalism I embrace … namely .. do you really need it? Think before you buy.

"The more stuff you have, the more stress you have" Example. You buy a boat. Now you have to make time to put it in the water. You have to make sure you have a vehicle that can pull the boat and trailer. You have upkeep on the boat. You have an annual fee on the trailer. All this and where I live, you can only go boating a few months out of the year. The pleasure of owning something has to bring more value to your life than the stress it causes. His comment of 4.1 earths to maintain U.S. type consumerism is pretty astounding. And to think that all other nations want what we have.

So...you got rid of all the stuff-now how do you pass on memories to your grandchildren when you have them? Actual 'things' help facilitate bringing those memories back and touching something tangible make it more real. I can bet your kid would love to see your stuff from when you were in school. In my Opinion, Minimalism is selfish and Lazy...

Loved loved this presentation!!! This society forces you to value the material things in life. Holidays have turned into a shopping spreed. You can hardly enjoy a holiday with all these sales taking over your life. I was a shopaholic for many years, but not I'm transitioning into a minimalist, which is not easy! BUT I like it!

Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him.“There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
Ronda Voorhis (22 дня назад)
Oh, boo hoo. Rich people are figuring out maybe they shouldn't have been so greedy, so consumer focused in the past. You fail to see the big picture: you have to possess items and wealth before you can downsize!!!!! If I take your talk to heart, my very essence of struggling every hour, every minute to survive has no meaning, no purpose BECAUSE I can't give away 90 percent of it. I call BULL. You fail to see that it isn't because you have all this stuff and now you can give/sell it away, the STUFF exists and will always exist out there somewhere until it is burned or decayed. Your greed and desires prompted the goods to be manufactured in the first place. So now they exist. Somewhere. You just shuffled them along the chain from your house/apartment to someone else's house/apt. You didn't downsize. You have a good job, you have had excess money in the past to demand consumer goods and have the ways and means to buy those goods and now you are just putting them on a moving conveyor belt to the next almost-hoarder. GET TO THE ROOT of the problem. Don't demand the goods in the FIRST place. It makes no sense to have two bathroom sinks right next to each other in the 4 or 5 or 6 bathrooms in a house that 2 people live in. Make do with one bathroom, one sink and be grateful. Make do from the beginning of your existence. Only then will you leave the world a better place. It isn't happiness that you feel because you don't possess a lot of stuff, it's easing the guilt of having had it in the first place.
Carrie Mueller (22 дня назад)
But what if you need "something" to jolt a memory that you may not have otherwise???
J M (22 дня назад)
I go by what Dave Ramsey says, "Don't spend money you don't have, to buy things you don't need, to impress people that don't care". If I ever feel like buying something, I ask myself if I have the money, for it. If the answer is Yes, I then ask myself, "Do I need it?" If the answer is "no" then I stop and move on. However, if the answer is yes, I ask myself if I'm buying it to impress anyone. If the answer is yes (you have to be honest with yourself) than I convince myself to spend the money on something similar but cheaper or less flashy (UNLESS I have enough money to buy said item two times over in cash and I know I'll be using it almost everyday). It works for me, if it doesn't work for you than I hope you find something that does. I also started investing my money everytime I want to spend money and that way I have money making money.

Being thirsty/hungry for newer more advanced STUFF, is what led humanity to great heights. It is the reason our technology advances, it is the reason why our lives get easier and more efficient day by day. If wanting the Human race to advance to new levels of civilization and technological greatness is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

He should really try to apply his principles of minimalism to his speeches. This speech is ridiculously overstretched and watered down just to fill 18 minutes. Everything he said could have been easily said in 1-2 minutes, tops. The rest is just unnecessary or redundant blabber.

I enjoy living simple with less. Material items are just materials. Our world is so caught up in keeping up with the next best thing. I find it exhausting. I gain by giving too. I love to donate and give to certain things like school supply drives. Giving and helping others adds value to my life and someone elses

Too much stuff can cause anxiety and stress. In a way it can feel like it weighs you down. Think about it this way, if there was a fire in your home, which items would you take? At the end of the day, most of it doesn’t add value to your life. It’s purely image.

I am tidy, I am organised, I have always been under this impression. I am not a hoarder. I am not a discontent person. But suddenly I have become so much concerned about the stuff that are lying one on another in my entire house, which is quite big, as big as four houses, full of clutter. I have come to know the value of having less and be happy doing something beautiful in life. So I have started getting rid of unnecessary things, which I thought are keeping the memories alive. What will happen when there will be no power left, physical and mental both? Thank God to give me light before that. Well what you have said is so true and you are so young to realise all this. God bless you.

My journey started last year in Spring. Wth a dream in which my daughters talked with me about what they called 'my hoarding '..... outside of this dream, before, we had these conversations that became discussions and arguments because I was not facing and admitting it. But in the dream I gave in to the truth and woke up with this realization: I do have a problem with hoarding. I understood that God had given me this dream because He says in His Word :"You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you FREE"....Ultimately and firstly, the Truth, the Way and the Life is Yeshuah, the Son of the Living God Who came in the world to save sinners ; and that's all of us. By His suffering death in our place for our sin He restores us one by one as each person who calls on His name believing in His work and in His Name, shall be saved, says His Word, the Bible. He also was the ultimate minimalist: He went from to town to town, from village to village with the clothes on His back and His trust in His Heavenly Father to provide whatever He and the people in His care needed. At one point that was lunch for 5000 men plus all the children and women. At another point in time He fed 4000 men plus. Each time He started by faith with a little bit of food, like the lunch that a little boy had and gladly gave. And God the Father caused the food not to run out , not even run out at all. For at the one time 12 baskets of leftovers were gathered in and at the other recorded time (not everything that Jesus did could be recorded because of the limits of paper and ink) 10 baskets. There is more to say about Jesus' minimalism and reminder that what we hoard only gets taken by thieves or eaten by moths and rust..... But back to my dream. After waking up I was done pretending,I was so happy that my problem was starting to be solved because of not denying it anymore because God spoke to me by dream. He cared that much and He does care for everyone of us and every detail of our lives because He LOVES us. He doesn't want to free us from things that are good for us but from things that HURT us. Which is hoarding ;) So back to me. I was so excited about the dream: I shared it with my discouraged (from trying and not prevailing) daughters and with a new friend. The new friend said: "Bettina, I am right where you are, facing the same problem. And I have been working on giving hundreds of items away to people. " One was a set of Legos that she wanted my disabled daughter to have. My daughter had never had that kind of intricate Legos just the big ones. We didn't even know she could do well with the tiny ones. Turns out that this God directed gift by my acquaintance opened our eyes to a skill and passion in our daughter that we all didn't know was hidden in her. So, this is how we became friends! We bonded as I shared my thankfulness and amazement with her about the gift and later about the dream. Well, would you know that this new friend helped me in amazing ways to organize/ declutter my kitchen pantry/ utility room, my dining room, my garden shed during many laughter and joy filled hours of working together on the project of minimalism? It all started with a God given dream and it continues with this wonderful feature. I learned a lot here as well. Thank you, Minimalist Guys. You are great encouragers. And many needs of other people are being met when we part from what really don't need anymore. :)

Well, that's the beautiful part of digitalizing & capturing memories these days. Though a thought I had: What if you really wanted to capture every memory. That'd be a ton of video. So how'd you manage that then & decide what's important. I mean these then are quite literally memories..

I heard that last message on the radio many years ago said by a pastor. He said. "In years past we used to love people and use things but now we love things and use people" That is so true of our consumer driven world and it does so much to give our lives false meaning and differentiate us from one another. We have let things define us. It's no longer who we are as a people but what we own that gives us value to others. But look at how people and businesses survive, they need to sell things and people need to buy them. To become minimalists means there needs to be a change to how we exist on this planet.

I love the idea with minimalism, I just cant get over the memories of old journals and things because I believe they hold a que that signal memories we would typically forget about . With my own experience I relive memories I forget about until I read old journals and it brings me a certain flood of life. I could never get rid of my old journals.

You can say that. When u kill the products through encouraging the mass on minisism resulting in many manufacturers closing down because of low demand on consumer products, a lot of people will be out of jobs, then really poverty and starving will come. These people are selfish never consider the livelihood of others. I would encourage embracing the middle way, not the minimism way living.

Hi guys, thank you very much for your words and your work, what you do is amazing. Two years ago I was in the same situation : good job, money, husband, big apartment and lots of stuff and i realize that i didn't ask for it, it wasn't my choice. So i ask myself what i really want to be happy. I started with selling and giving stuff, I stopped shopping and buying and i changed my job. I was a psychologist and i became a pastry chef and now I'm so freaking happy !!! I watched your documentary 2 times because i love it and it makes me fell so good. So thank you ! I send you lots of love from Paris and maybe one day I will also have a hug from you ! 😊

When the decluttering craze first started there were a lot of selfish people who then decluttered into my home so I ended up with even more clutter. Then the same people went shopping for more stuff instead of finding a hobby other than shopping and buying experiences instead of stuff. Go swimming, go to the cinema (even on your own), get politically active, get involved in community activities or take tennis lessons. Do something other than shopping. I got rid of friends who used to drag me around the shops. I'd rather do something more interesting instead. Is it too much to ask that we go to the zoo or to an art exhibition instead?
